Welcome to Nadvoitsy!
The “Calling card of Nadvoitsy” is the Voitsy Waterfall, the monument to nature and history. It gave the name to this town.
Nadvoitsy is situated on the bank of the Voitsy Lake. The main waterway is the White Sea–Baltic Canal.
Nadvoitsy is rather old town; it was mentioned in official papers in the beginning of the 18th century thanks to silver mine. First, Nadvoitsy was a small settlement but then it began its development thanks to building of the local economic mainstay “Nadvoitsy Aluminum smelter”.
The population of Nadvoitsy is about 8 000 people. There is a railway station, which was built in 1916. By the way, railway had different names in different periods of history: Murmanskaya railway, Kirovskaya railway and now it is Oktyabrskaya railway. Also you can see a port, a hotel, a bank, a post office, several kindergartens, a secondary school, Art school, Sport school, a library and a plenty of shops in Nadvoitsy.
Some streets of Nadvoitsy were named after famous people whose deeds were connected with town’s history. For example, Spiridonov Street got its name thanks to Ivan Spiridonov, one of the leaders of the Red Guard. There is the memorial plaque in honour of struggle between the Anglo-American invaders and the troop of Red Guards under the command of Spiridonov on the building of railway station.
It is interesting to know that Metallurgists Street had other name – Voroshilov Street. Kliment Voroshilov was the Сommander-in-Сhief of the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). Many inhabitants took part in this war. Some of them perished there. People commemorate them and two monuments were established in Nadvoitsy, they are “The Monument to Citizens of Nadvoitsy Perished during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945)” and “The Bed of Honour to Perished Soldiers during the Great Patriotic War”
Nadvoitsy was visited by some celebrities among them Mikhail Prishvin, a famous Russian writer. He described the countryside of this town in his famous book “In the Land of Unfrightened Birds”. One of the streets was named after him.
