Places to Visit in London
London is the capital of the United Kingdom. It’s very big and there are a lot of things to see and places to visit.
The London Eye. If you want to see London, the best place to go is the Eye. The Eye is a big wheel on the River Thames. The Eye is very popular. Every day 1600 people go on it. There are 33 capsules and one ride takes 30 minutes. The Eye is very high-133 meters. At the top of the Eye you get a great view of London.
You can see many places in London.
Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. The Queen has four other places in Britain, but this is her most famous home. When the flag is on the top she is at home. There are 600 rooms in Buckingham Palace. It has an indoor swimming pool and a cinema. If you are in London between August and October, you can go inside Buckingham Palace. You can see the State dining room, ballroom, and the Queen’s gallery with all her paintings. But you can’t see all the rooms. The palace is too big! You can watch a ceremony Changing of the Guard every day at 11 a.m. in front of Buckingham Palace.
Trafalgar Square is in the center of London. It is the most beautiful square in London and the popular place for people to meet. They like to feed pigeons and look at the fountains. In the middle of the square there is Nelson's Column, which is 51 m high. Admiral Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument.
To the left you can see the National Gallery. It has a great collection of paintings by British, Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch and other famous artists. There are two beautiful fountains in front of the National Gallery.
The Tower of London is a very big old castle. It’s nine hundred years old. At different times the Tower was a royal residence, fortress, prison and, even, zoo. It is a museum now where the Crown Jewels are kept. The Tower has Beefeaters and ravens. The Beefeaters don’t eat beef, they guard the Tower. Forty Beefeaters (or Yeoman Warders) live in the Tower. Seven black ravens are an official part of the Tower. They live in the Tower. The legend says that if they leave the Tower it is very bad luck for Britain. Every day the ravens eat meat and eggs.
Big Ben is the famous clock tower of London. The height of the tower is 96,3 meters. In 2012, the tower was renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen and now officially known as the Elizabeth Tower. Many people think it’s the name of the tower, but Big Ben is the name of the bell inside. The real and official name of Big Ben is the Great Bell.
Westminster Abbey is opposite the Houses of Parliament. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. Edward the Confessor founded it in 1050. The construction lasted 300 years. Nearly all English kings and queens have been crowned here. There are more than one hundred museums in London.
The British Museum is the oldest museum in the world. Its world-famous collection of statues, mummies, jewels and coins makes it a number one place to visit for tourists.
Madam Tussauds, the waxwork museum, has so many visitors that you can wait for an hour in the line. At Madam Tussauds, you can meet hundreds of famous people in one day. It has wax models of pop stars, film stars, sport stars and politicians. It even has a Chamber of Horror, with famous criminals…. Do not go there if you are afraid!
