Очевидно, что невозможно выучить иностранный язык, не пользуясь словарями-справочниками. В данной статье предлагается практический материал, полученный в ходе исследования лексикографических источников, проведенного ученицей 10 класса Спириной Д. в рамках учебно-исследовательской работы. Материал может быть применен при изучении темы Mass media (News) .
Объектом исследования нами было выбрано слово «news». Материалом исследования послужили работы ученых-лингвистов и традиционные бумажные и электронные словари авторитетных издательств:

3. Англо-русский фразеологический словарь (Кунин, 1984 г)

При помощи этимологических онлайн-словарей ( , ) узнаем происхождение слова:
«The English word "news" developed in the 14th century as a special use of the plural form of "new". In Middle English, the equivalent word was newes, like the French nouvelles and the German neues. Similar developments are found in the Slavic languages —the Czech and Slovak noviny (from nový, "new"), the cognate Polish nowiny and Russian novosti—and in the Celtic languages: the Welsh newyddion (from newydd) and the Cornish nowodhow (from nowydh)».

Sometimes still regarded as plural, 17c.-19c. Meaning "tidings" is early 15c. Meaning "radio or television program presenting current events" is from 1923.Bad news "unpleasant person or situation" is from 1926. Expression no news, good news can be traced to 1640s. Expression news to me is from 1889.
The News in the Virginia city Newport News is said to derive from the name of one of its founders, William Newce.

Проанализировав данные этимологического словаря, приходим к выводу, что в древнеанглийском лексема news является формой множественного числа существительного new в значении «новая вещь, предмет», которое в свою очередь образовалось путем перехода основы прилагательного new в другую словоформу (парадигму). Употреблялось в библейских переводах. С течением времени значение существительного изменялось: новость, известие появилось в начале 15 века; радио- или телепрограмма о текущих событиях в 1923г. Идиомы с лексемой news появляются в английском языке с 17-го века.
При помощи «бумажных» толковых словарей английского языка выделяем следующие лексические значения слова:

Словарь синонимов занимает особое место в системе словарей, так как он ориентирован на описание связанных по смыслу слов. Именно он позволяет узнать такие слова:

Во фразеологическом словаре удалось обнаружить достаточно много новых интересных выражений, где слово»news» представлено в словосочетаниях с примерами употребления:
•bad news has wings (или travels fast) = худые вести не лежат на месте, плохая молва на крыльях летит
•break the news = осторожно сообщать дурную новость
•fiddler`s news = запоздалые новости
•in the news = на страницах газет, в центре внимания
•Job`s news = печальные новости
•News on the hour = последние известия
•No news (is) good news = отсутствие вестей – хорошая весть
•Stop-press news = экстренные новости
Словарь наиболее употребительных слов английского языка полезен еще и тем, что в нем указывается, какому варианту английского (Британскому или Американскому) больше свойственно слово:

В итоге, приблизительно 180 новых слов и выражений было найдено с помощью электронных словарей, и еще 74 слова было найдено с помощью традиционных словарей. Полученные сведения позволяют количественно и качественно расширить словарный запас и являются актуальными как для широкого круга изучающих языки, так и для преподавателей.
